Every hockey player that laces up his skates does it because they absolutely love the game of hockey to the purest form. At the junior hockey level, the love of the game is only half of the reason that they suit up and play hard. The other half is opportunity. Not only do the players get the chance to learn more about the game of hockey but they play each game in hopes of receiving collegiate offers and continue to grow through the USA hockey system.
The MQT Royales, of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League has four players that have received such offers to attend school and play hockey. Marquette native and MNJHL goal scoring leader Dallas McLaughlin has received an offer to play for the Marian University Sabres (Fond du Lac, Wis.) of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Aurora University of Aurora, Illinois followed suit and made offers to three of the Royales. Forwards Jeff Salzbrunn and Robby Gervino, who are second and third in points scored received the offer on the offensive side. On the defensive side, Nick DeSimone was offered a spot by the Spartans.

Offers from NCAA Division Three schools work differently from D1 schools like Northern Michigan because D3 does not give out scholarships, just simply offers to attend the school and play athletics.

Royales Head Coach Mike Stanaway has made quite the name for him self in getting his players division three offers. As of right now, these are offers only and none of the players have thought too hard about the decision and have been focused on keeping their 20-game winning streak going.

“In the coming weeks when things slow down we will look more into the schools and teams, it is still very early as offers usually don’t start coming in until later in the season,” Stanaway said.
