The project is lead by bartender Kelly Sloat. Sloat adopted her dog, a black lab named George, through the Because of Mandy project in 2011.
“He is this beautiful, super friendly and super smart dog,” Sloat said of George. “(The adoption process) went easily. We met two days after putting in the application and two days later we were walking through the woods. It was amazing.”
George is one of two dogs adopted through the Because of Mandy project. Birdie, a female mixed breed, was recently adopted by another Wooden Nickel bartender. Other employees are helping in where they can with promoting the event, while volunteers will work donation tables and raffles.
“Everybody is doing what they can to help,” said bartender Hannah Syrjala, as she painted posters for the event Monday morning. “Because of Mandy is a great organization and they should get all that they deserve.”
Because of Mandy is a charity organization based out of Calumet, Mich. Founded in 2010 by Aimee Lyn Ryding finds permanent homes for rescue dogs, while raising awareness about kill shelters and animal abuse. The organization is named after a Puggle (half pug, half beagle) named Mandy found by Ryding in an Indiana shelter. Because of Mandy dogs are not in a shelter or kennel, but rather housed by foster families all over the Upper Peninsula.
In addition to the bands, a silent auction will be held from 2-5 p.m., 50-50 raffles and a barbeque will be available along side drink specials. A three-dollar admission fee will be charged, with all fees directly donated to Because of Mandy. Anyone who also donates dog-related supplies and toys will also get more tickets to the raffle.
