Managing Editor Flanigan's Bar has ended their regular cover charge, effective last Friday, January 10. "It was time for a change," said Flanigan's Bar manager Brad Wood. "We think its better to have people coming inside and enjoying themselves than worry about cover." Flanigan's, located at 429 W. Washington St., was the last bar in MQT to have a regular cover since the Upfront & Co closed down. Other locations like the Verabar and Blue Lounge, both under the same owner and location, have a cover depending for special occasions like holidays and entertainment. The one-dollar cover charge was collected on Fridays and Saturdays at Flanigan's for more than seven years and was implemented to offset labor prices for security on busy nights. According to Wood, the change in cover will not effect the regular entertainment schedule of live music on Thursdays and Fridays, trivia Sundays and karaoke five nights a week. Managing Editor Superior Entertainment Center in MQT Township has thrived as a locally-owned business in a corporate driven area. "There are advantage of being an independent," said co-owner Dan Dallas. "We can adapt to market changes and trends a little quicker and get to the needs of our customers a little quicker." See how they have stayed open as the one remaining bowling alley in MQT and how adding a restaurant has continued to help them grow. This video was produced as an assignment in Northern Michigan University's BC 200 class. Brice Burge is the Managing Editor of MQTSocialScene.com and can be reached at [email protected]. Managing Editor MQT's latest culinary experience is Sol Azteca, located at 105 E Washington Street, directly above L'Attitudes. The location is great, with available parking, a wonderful view of the Lower Harbor and a great setting for an authentic Mexican dining experience with a MQT spin. Unfortunately for Sol Azteca and for myself, the experience was not good. By Brice Burge
Managing Editor An internet start up company covering the Detroit Lions has found a voice in MQT. Cover32.com, a website that blogs about all 32 NFL franchises, is in their first year of reporting. Each team has an editor and group of writers. However, the Lions subsite is more connected to the U.P.. Northern Michigan University alumnus Will Burns is the editor for Detroit on the website. A former Lower Michigan resident, he came to MQT as a NMU student and stayed after finding different jobs in and out of media. After finding about the website through Twitter, he joined on as editor. |
