Aubree’s Pizza won the second annual NMU Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Hometown Taste-Off on Monday, Nov. 25 at NMU’s Jacobetti Commons.
Aubree’s roughly doubled up second place finisher Toarmina’s-Butchie Boys in a battle of Michigan-based franchises. The MQT stores are the only Upper Peninsula locations for both franchises. Local franchise Main Street finished in third. National chains Domino’s and Pizza Hut came in fourth and fifth respectively. MQT’s newest franchise Jet’s Pizza also competed.

Each person at the event were given two tickets to vote for their favorite pies, which could either be split between two different locations or to fully support their favorite pizza. The event was open to NMU students and members of the community. Only six pizzerias competed in the taste-off, with some big MQT favorites out of contention. Both major Italian restaurants Villa Capri and Casa Calabria did not enter. My Place and the Northland Pub located in local hotels also did not compete. Vango’s and Portside Inn did not enter, along with bars known for their pizza like Stan’s Dry Dock. | |
The Culinary Students of NMU also provided dessert, veggie pizzas and beverages for the event. All proceeds went toward NMU’s Student Flexible Aid Fund, which helps students who encounter unexpected expenses not covered by traditional financial aid.
